Kaleidoscopic Resonance
Novel-in-Progress/NaNoWriMo Special
Issue
The gears creak and groan as they spin, yanking the pulleys and wheels
churning the idea butter inside that writing machine of your brain. Ideas,
objects, themes, plot twists, traits, sensory details, and a little magic
fairy dust, fold together, combining into a somewhat sensible novel, complete
with developed characters and (gasp!) a plot! The writing machine can't
be purchased in stores. It only comes in the rare minds of the truly talented.
Beware of imitators.
It takes a true machine to churn out 50,000 words in 30 days. It takes
a hell of a lot of handiwork to craft a novel at all. Past issues of Kaleidoscopic
Resonance have centered on poetry and short stories, but as I, your humble
editor, have taken on my first National Novel Writing Month challenge,
I have developed a new respect for the art of novelling. So the latest
issue of Kaleidoscopic Resonance will be all about your longer works-in-progress.
We want to see your best scene. Your favorite scene. Your most difficult
scene to write. We definitely want to see your first scene. Hoping to
catch a glimpse of those spinning gears, we want to know your process,
progress, and procrastination habits. Don't just send us a scene, tell
us a story too. Half of the fun of NaNoWriMo is the "literary abandon"
we experience as we throw ourselves headfirst into our art, letting it
consume our lives almost entirely for thirty days. I look forward to sharing
this experience with you all. Head over to the Submission
Guidelines and drop us a line. (If only it could count toward
your word count.)
To my fellow NaNo-ers, good luck in reaching 50k by the 30th. To my fellow
writers, write on!
Best wishes,
Kate Shelton

Creativity
is a lot like looking through a kaleidoscope. You look at a set of elements,
the same ones everyone else sees, but then reassemble those floating bits
and pieces into an enticing new possibility.
